About Our Name

A device for throwing a spear or dart, used as early as 10,000 B.C. consisting of a rod or board held at one end with a hook or thong at the rear end, for holding the projectile in place until released.

The Atlatl, a distinctive mechanism named from the Aztec word meaning "Throwing Board" was the result of early human innovation in dealing with hunting and defense requirements of the environment.  That innovation was based on the engineering principle of lengthening the throwing lever arm (provided by the forearm), via grasping the hooked rod, which in turn was used to propel the spear or dart.  This elongated lever offered the early user an increased spear velocity and thus a range expanded far beyond that achieved by conventional throwing.   This obviously, augmented food gathering and defense tasks.
