Remedial Site Services

Atlatl provides remedial services for sites contaminated with hazardous materials regulated under RCRA, TSCA and CERCLA.  Atlatl maintains the materials, equipment, and technical resources required for remedial site projects.  Our personnel are trained and experienced on assessment of contaminated sites, containment and clean up of spill sites, and remediation of contaminated sites.  The scope of Atlatl's remedial services ranges from site investigation studies to turn-key remediation projects encompassing assessment, alternative clean-up evaluations, design, and final site remedial actionOur typical Remedial Site Service lines are described below.

Phased Environmental Assessments

Our initial task on a contaminated site is an environmental assessment. Information gathered during this assessment includes the detection and identification of any contaminants. Data from this task is used to plan subsequent activities at the site. Atlatl performs environmental assessments in a 3-phased approach, to determine the level of contamination at a site.

Site Investigation

Atlatl designs site investigations to determine extent of contamination, based on data obtained from an environmental assessment.  The extent of contamination study includes both surface and subsurface investigation of potentially-impacted soils and groundwater.  Our staff of engineers and hydrogeologists can quickly design soil sampling and drilling programs to identify the presence and extent of contamination.  The programs can include surface sampling to identify localized soil contamination, subsurface soil probes or borings to identify downward migration of contaminants through the soils, and installation of monitoring wells to assess impacts on groundwater quality.  Sometimes, the extent of contamination study will reveal drums, hazardous waste, PCBs, or other regulated wastes.  Atlatl has the knowledge and capabilities to properly manage these materials during the remedial action phase of the project.

As part of site investigation tasks, Atlatl surveys the risks associated with the identified contaminants.  The risk assessment examines the potential threats to human health and the environment, and addresses the level of protective clothing necessary for on-site personnel.

Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study

After the extent of contamination has been determined, Atlatl performs an evaluation of alternatives for site remediation.  This involves a review of proven remediation technologies applicable to the site.  Our staff has knowledge and experience in many remedial system designs.  Atlatl can design systems to effectively remediate contamination resulting from a variety of sources.  Atlatl examines criteria including costs, process effectiveness, remediation time, and regulatory goals.   Atlatl's objective is a comprehensive, cost effective and practical remediation system for the specific site.

Remedial Design

Atlatl designs an action plan to remediate contamination at the site based on the method recommended by the feasibility study.  Our staff's experiences range from small, privately-owned leaking underground tanks involving removal of small amounts of contaminated soils, to a large-scale (over 4000 gallons of gasoline) release in a National Park.  Atlatl's hydrogeologists and engineers are experienced in remedial system design, soil remediation, groundwater remediation, soil vapor extraction, air stripping, construction management, and operation and maintenance.  Atlatl's Remedial Designs specify personnel and environmental monitoring methods, remediation methods, contaminant transportation and disposal, personnel and equipment decontamination, and site closure.

Safety and Health Plans

For all remedial action projects, Atlatl's staff, prepares a safety and health plan to ensure that on-site activities are conducted safely, to protect workers, the public, and the environment.  An operational safety plan that specifies site-specific procedures and precautions is prepared.  Proper personal protective equipment for site workers is specified, and if needed, personnel monitoring plans are developed and followed to monitor workers' potential for exposure to hazardous substances.

Atlatl has provided safety and health monitoring plans and services for many projects, involving a wide variety of hazardous substances. Atlatl has experience in personnel air monitoring on complex Superfund projects, and on small remediation projects.

Remedial Action

Following remedial design, Atlatl initiates remedial action to clean up the site. Atlatl has provided remedial action services for numerous sites with various contaminants.  These sites have included drum burial sites, metals-contaminated soils, PCB-contaminated soils, leaking underground storage tank sites, and contaminated groundwater sites.  Atlatl has also responded to incidents in which immediate remedial action was required. These incidents have included leaking underground storage tanks and piping, petroleum surface spills, and transportation accidents.

During site clean-up projects, Atlatl ensures that:

  • Qualified laboratories are used for analysis of hazardous materials.
  • Transportation services are contracted to qualified, licensed waste haulers.

Groundwater Remediation

Atlatl's experienced staff of engineers and hydrogeologists has designed and installed numerous groundwater remediation systems, including air strippers, groundwater depression and re-injection systems, product recovery wells, groundwater product skimmers, aboveground oil/water separators, activated carbon systems, groundwater air injection systems, and vapor recovery systems.

Our staff has employed skimmers to remove free-floating product, followed by pump-and-treat technology (i.e., air strippers) to remove dissolved components in groundwater.  Phase-separated and dissolved hydrocarbon sites have been dealt with.  We also provide long-term operation of systems, including monitoring and maintenance of equipment, collection and disposal of removed product, and monitoring of free product depth and groundwater quality.  We also train clients who wish to operate and maintain their own systems (i.e., in remote locations).

Soil Remediation

Various methods have been used by Atlatl to remediate contaminated soils, depending on the contaminant, volume, and depth. If contamination is localized, or cannot be removed in-situ (i.e. metals-contaminated soils), soils may be excavated for disposal.  If excavation is not economically viable, Atlatl may design in-situ systems to remove the contamination.

We have designed soil vapor extraction systems to volatilize contaminants and collect vapors in a recovery system, where soil permeability allows sufficient airflow. Other soil remediation methods, such as bioremediation, land farming, and land application for beneficial use, have been successfully employed on our past projects.

Upon completion of groundwater and soil remediation projects, we work closely with regulatory agencies on behalf of the client to complete site closures. Atlatl then dismantles unneeded equipment and implements abandonment procedures for unnecessary monitoring wells.

Waste Minimization Consultation

Atlatl's professional staff can provide customer-specific services to waste generators who may be able to improve their economics and/or reduce environmental liability by investing in waste minimization. A typical waste minimization program may identify process changes or raw material changes that reduce or eliminate hazardous waste generated by a facility. This may reduce disposal costs, environmental liabilities, and legal liabilities from the waste.

Environmental Consulting

Atlatl provides environmental design and consulting services over a wide spectrum.  Our staff has broad, technology-based backgrounds in pollution prevention, water resource monitoring and remediation, and remedial site services.   Our scientists and engineers can design and implement cost effective solutions for the myriad of environmental problems encountered.
